2024 ESTATE MATARO
GROWING SEASON
The dry winter and spring made the vines work during the early part of the growing season, and bud burst started in September, three weeks earlier than the year before. Damaging frosts particularly, in September and October meant some vineyards had significant damage that influenced their subsequent yield. Veraison in many vineyards was a month earlier than 2023. Whites ripened quickly, retaining good fragrance and natural acids early. Reds, with small berries, show intensity and vibrancy. An unseasonal heatwave in early March caused short-lived concern for growers, but for those grapes that were still hanging they recovered well in the cooler weather that followed. Depending on site and variety, crops are anywhere between 50 and 90% of normal. What we did receive is exceptional.
TASTING NOTE
Our Estate Mataro from the wonderful 2024 vintage comes from block 3 and 4 of our Estate Vineyard in Stone Well. These blocks are very old bush vine Mataro. The wine is Certified Organic and Certified Sustainable. The soil in these blocks have a heavy clay content, perfect for Mataro. The resulting wine has all the hallmarks of old vine Mataro grown in tough conditions – bright purple red hue, lifted earthy florals, spice, medium bodied with layers of fine savoury tannin. A wine that just screams out for food but given the fruit weight that characterises this vintage, a wine that can be enjoyed on its own.

2023 Estate Mataro Block 3

2023 Estate Mataro Block 3
Steve Leszczynski (www.qwinereviews.com)
94 Points - Bright, welcoming and energised aromas spill from the glass. It's an invitation hard to refuse. As time goes on it bunkers down and gets serious. Another ripping Mataro from Hayes Family Wines. If you sat down to share a glass with winemaker Andrew Seppelt, he would reach for a glass of Mataro nine times out of ten such is his love for the variety. This 2023 is a beauty once again.
From sustainably farmed and certified organic survivor vines (70 years+) planted in the 1940s, this wine used to be known as the Block 3 single vineyard, however, the 2023 sees a little of Block 4 (directly behind running perpendicular to Block 3) blended in hence the renaming to simply the Estate.
Sauteed mushrooms, blueberries, mulberries and dried petals all seek your approval. It offers an outstretched hand and a joyous comforting smile. Fine spices skirt the edges with some truffles, earthiness and meatiness as only Mataro knows how. Barbecued steak, pan juices and raspberry coulis ripple throughout. There's great width through the mouth and that length just hangs as those blue and purple fruits just keep circling back. Dusty, almost chalky tannins plant themselves on a long and moreish finish. It's a mouthful of delish. Come at me!

2022 Estate Mataro Block 3
Huon Hooke (the real review)
92 Points - Deep, dark, dense colour, with a tint of purple, the bouquet very intense and earthy, dusty/terracotta and smoky mataro-like pepperiness. The wine is full-bodied, dense, concentrated and firm, the tannins almost tough in their impact. Very focused and penetrating, but needs a little more time to loosen up. 14 JAN 2024
2021 Estate Mataro Block 3
Vintage Journal (Andrew Caillard)
97 Points - Deep crimson. Intense and vibrant dark cherry, chinotto, bitter dark chocolate panforte aromas. Superbly concentrated with dense blackberry pastille fruits, fine chocolaty tannins and brilliantly integrated savoury, mocha oak notes before finishing bittersweet with superb density, richness of flavour and torque. A wonderful mataro.

93 Points - Mataro or mourvèdre, you say tomato ... either way, extremely low yields mean the Hayes family has to work relentlessly to make enough live on. Here it's made a very user-friendly wine with layered blackberry/currant fruits and a savoury farewell. 100 dozen made.
2019 Estate Mataro Blk 2
2021 Wine Companion (James Halliday)
96 Points - From the estate vineyard at Stone Well, sharing the disparate low yields of the vintage, and also the power and concentration. The colour is deep purple-crimson with a bright rim, the bouquet floral, the palate full-bodied yet with great balance between dark berry fruit, earthy notes and ripe tannins. Will live for decades. 50 dozen made.
Nick Butler (therealreview.com)
95 Points - Crimson-purple colour with paler edges. Dried red flowers, raspberries and plums, oak is softly-spoken. The palate bursts with juicy red-berried fruits, stewed rhubarb and raspberry liqueruer, satsuma plums too. Far more richly-fruited than most Mataros. Delicious as a result 4/3/2020

94 Points - Another fabulous release from Hayes Family Wines. Planted in the 1940s, this Block 3 Mataro site is now certified organic. Have a sip of and you'll soon see why you should drink more Mataro.
Scents of pretty violets and red flowers whisk you off to higher places. Red plums, vibrant dark berries and touches of dark chocolate all mingle seamlessly. Etched with a delicate earthiness and a savoury edge, there's an unmistakable thread of cured meats running through the core. A fleck of cola emerges on the second day of tasting. In typical Barossa style, this would be an ideal match for a German meat platter. An excellent wine.
