The Fromm’s have been growing grapes in Williamstown in the Southern Barossa Valley for over 100 years. The Old Block from which we source these grapes was planted in 1919. Current custodians, Ryan and Sally Fromm are wonderful people, some of my very best friends.

Ryan is also a wonderful grape grower, one of the very best. We are fortunate to share this old block with some of the most famous barossa producers. The fruit is exceptional year in year out. Stylistically different to the more northern vineyards, but still dense powerful red and blue fruits dominate the nose, new french oak plays its part, but the fruit dominates. the full bodied pallet is long, dense and supported by tannins that will carry this wine in the decades to come.

FROMM 1919 - Williamstown

The Fromm family have been farming this old vineyard for more than 100 years. It remains in the family to this day, currently managed by Ryan and Sally Fromm.

The old vines certainly play there part, but Williamstown is located in the very south of the Barossa Valley. the weather is typically cooler, and the rainfall more consistent than what we typically experience further North. The resulting wines are rich and powerful, but carry an elegance that we rarely see in Barossa Shiraz.

A wine that stands apart from its siblings in the Family Selection but is absolutely lovely now and will continue to develop and improve for many years

Technical Tasting Notes

2024 fromm 1919 Shiraz

GROWING SEASON
The dry winter and spring made the vines work during the early part of the growing season, and bud burst started in September, three weeks earlier than the year before. Damaging frosts particularly, in September and October meant some vineyards had significant damage that influenced their subsequent yield. Veraison in many vineyards was a month earlier than 2023.

Reds, with small berries, show intensity and vibrancy. An unseasonal heatwave in early March caused short-lived concern for growers, but for those grapes that were still hanging they recovered well in the cooler weather that followed. Depending on site and variety, crops are anywhere between 50 and 90% of normal but quality particularly in Shiraz is exceptional.
