Technical Tasting Notes

2023 Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro

A blend of old vine Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro grown on our vineyards in the Northern Barossa parishes of Ebenezer and Koonunga and from Williamstown in the South of the Barossa Valley. Matured in large format seasoned French oak barrels before being bottled in early 2024. A classic Barossa blend that carries the hallmarks of old vines in a very good albeit cooler and very late ripening season. Grenache brings the bright red fruits, shiraz the mid-pallet weight and richness and Mataro the savoury backbone and moreish finish. A little less plush than previous vintages. The GSM drinks well now and will continue to do so for many years. A wine for all occasions.

Region/Sub Region: 100% Barossa Valley
Grape Variety: Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro
Alcohol: 14.5%
Production: 1400 bottles

2023 GSM (Grenache Shiraz Mataro)

Not Yet Reviewed

2022 GSM (Grenache Shiraz Mataro)

2026 James Halliday Wine Companion (Dave Brookes)

92 Points - With dark plum, raspberry and blueberry fruits, it's a spice-packed wine with hints of dried cranberry, white pepper, fruitcake, cola, purple flowers, graphite and earth. Nicely weighted with a pure flow of fruit, superfine, powdery tannins and plenty of energy at the tail end.

THE REAL REVIEW (Aaron BRASHER)

90 Points - Youthful, dark red and opaque in the glass. Heady aromas of dried herbs, spice, violets, plum, mulberry and grape marc. Opulent, mouth-filling and plush on the palate. Dark, juicy fruits, dark chocolate, textured tannins and some crunchy acidity are all doing their thing. There’s plenty of flesh and substance here, with decent balance and real drinkability 2025–2032

2021 GSM (Grenache Shiraz Mataro)

Andrew Caillard MW (The Vintage Journal)

94 Points - Deep crimson. Bold and rich aromas of blackberry and tar with a line of white pepper spice and graphite aromas. Lovely buoyant GSM with plentiful dark plum, raspberry, pure blackberry fruits, fine plentiful chalky tannins, lovely mid-palate volume/ richness and underlying savoury notes. Very expressive, finishing chocolaty with juicy flavours.

Now–2028

2023 James Halliday Wine Companion (Dave Brookes)

91 Points - Grenache, shiraz and mataro all sourced from the Koonunga and Ebenezer parishes of the northern Barossa. Vibrant red purple in the glass. Spice-led satsuma plum, mulberry and berry fruit characters with hints of dried cranberries, roasting meats, licorice, purple flowers and earth. Excellent fruit purity, with ground-coffee tannin grip, deep spice and a real acid twang on the medium-length finish.

2019 Grenache Shiraz Mataro

James Halliday (theaustralian.com.au)

95 Points - Am 85/10/5% blend. Frost, drought and hail savaged yield but not the quality of this deeply coloured blend. The flavours coalesce into a cherry/plum spectrum on the palate, the mouthfeel velvety, the balance perfect. 14.5% alc.

2018 Grenache Shiraz Mataro

2020 Wine Companion (James Halliday)

92 Points - Matured in used French oak for 9 months. The colour isn't as deep as its special bottlings, but the flavours are energetic and glide through to the end of the palate on a spider web of tannins. Great value.

QWine (www.qwinereviews.com)

92 Points - From the Regional Series, this is a wonderful drink to kick back with on a cool autumn evening. It's a step up from the previous vintage yet it maintains its supreme slurp factor.

Gee I like the way this wine goes about it's work. That industrious workman like swagger without the frills but a well presented product is the reward.

Medium bodied, GSM is one of the great marriages in the wine world, albeit a menage a trois. The fruit is sourced from the northern Barossa vineyards of Koonunga and Ebenezer.

Attractive scents of blue and red flowers, juicy red berries plus a lovely rub of earthiness and dusty tannins sum it up best. A 85/10/5 blend, there's some impressive width from the bright fruit but there is a focus on the mid palate. A great length stretches the interest factor as brown spices continue to entice. It's moreish deluxe - pour a big glass and kick back kind of wine.

Delightful now but will age well to the medium term if desired.

2017 Grenache Shiraz Mataro

Huon Hooke (huonhooke.com) 500ml.

88 Points - Deepish red colour with a good tinge of purple. The bouquet is subdued and earthy, the palate straightforward and bright, bold and generous in fruit. Good honest grenache, well-priced. 17/3/2018

Drink 2018 to 2027

QWine (www.qwinereviews.com)

90 Points - It comes in a 500mL bottle for 'mid-week enjoyment or for that second bottle you just have to have'. A more than appropriate comment on the back label. A great little package too - a perfect match for a burger, and that's exactly what I did.

Such a pleasurable and easy drinking wine. No thinking, no fuss.

Raspberries, earth, soft brown spices, maximum slurp factor the winner. The spice hangs long urging another sip. A fine release oozing approachability. Thank goodness the 500mL bottle stopped me going back for more. Well worth the money.

Drink now to three years. 13/4/2018
