Technical Tasting Notes
2022 Marananga shiraz
GROWING SEASON
The 2022 Barossa Valley vintage will be remembered as the second almost faultless season in a row after an equally impressive although different 2021 vintage. Both Vintages were cool, the coolest since 2002. Good spring rains meant that we entered the growing season with good soil moisture levels. A warm dry growing season followed, with balanced and healthy canopies producing an average crop of extremely high quality fruit.
A pigeon pair, perhaps the best two since 1990/1991 if not longer. The good news is that flavours and colours (in reds) and the vibrancy and lift in the whites are incredible. Overall quality is exceptional. Another extremely good Barossa vintage in the making.
TASTING NOTE
The 2022 Marananga Shiraz once again demonstrates why locals rate the subregion so highly. A mountain of fruit, rich powerful, flooding the senses with classic Barossa Shiraz characters. This year, the wine spent an extra 6 months in the very best french oak. An absolute bomb of a wine that will drink well for many years albeit right now at release at the very early stages of life.

96 Points - I have no doubt that some more fancied Barossa wineries would price this at $200+. A superb Shiraz, when you consider the age of the vines, the quality of oak and astute winemaking, this single vineyard Hayes Family Wines Marananga is an excellent expression of the variety.
Sourced from a low-cropping site in Marananga, the vines are over 100 years old. Over a few days of tasting, this built some fabulous momentum. Decant to enjoy now, but be patient and hold and the glory of exceptional Barossa Shiraz awaits in the years to come.
It opens with scents of clove, cedar and cardamom with mulberries and blueberry paste. The more I inspect this the more the words depth and detail echo. Those aromas flow through to the mouth and dense plums flood every crevice with a touch of coconut rough sliding in. Long and moreish, fine woodsy and baking spices curl around the mouth ever so effortlessly. And that length! Magnificent and seemingly unstoppable. It's curious yet precise all at the same time. Just brilliant. Stand and applaud.

94 Points - The more brooding 2021 Shiraz Marananga boasts generous dark chocolate and blackberry aromas with excellent purity and fruit definition, well-matched with fine French oak. Composure and shape are the key here with excellent overall focus that drives through to a super long finish accented by firm tannin. The 2021 offers fabulous balance and is built to last.
