Mataro from the right site, in the right vintage can be breath taking. But identifying the quality, particularly in respect to tannin ripeness and handling it appropriately in the winery can elevate the wine to another level.

In this case, old vine mataro from the Schulz Primrose Vineyard, a single barrel of pressings. Every ferment has essentially two types of juice, free run and pressings. Our long ferments undoubtedly extracts colour, tannin and ultimately goodness from the grapes. The pressings are normally blended back in with the free run. But in this case, the pressings component was kept separate, barrel aged longer and bottled separately.

Deep purple, beautifully rich red fruits, earth and spice. Medium bodied, elegant, ripe backed by firm line of fine tannin. This wine is just starting its journey and will improve for many years.

2024 MATARO PRESSINGS

GROWING SEASON
The dry winter and spring made the vines work during the early part of the growing season, and bud burst started in September, three weeks earlier than the year before. Damaging frosts particularly, in September and October meant some vineyards had significant damage that influenced their subsequent yield. Veraison in many vineyards was a month earlier than 2023.

Reds, with small berries, show intensity and vibrancy. An unseasonal heatwave in early March caused short-lived concern for growers, but for those grapes that were still hanging they recovered well in the cooler weather that followed. Depending on site and variety, crops are anywhere between 50 and 90% of normal. We have very high hopes for the vintage in the years to come.

TASTING NOTE
Mataro from the right block in the right barossa season can be a world class wine. 2024 was a wonderful vintage, producing fruit forward wines and the Schulz Hill Block is a tremendous vineyard block. Deep purple, beautifully rich red fruits, earth and spice. Medium bodied, ripe backed by firm line of fine tannin. This wine is just starting its journey and will improve for many years. A wine that shows how good Mataro can be!
