Our 2024 Koonunga Ancestor Vine Shiraz from the exceptional 2024 vintage comes from the old Becker Block in Koonunga, in the Barossa’s Northern reaches. The vines were thought to have been planted in the 1860s or 1870s, but as was the case back then, documentation is scarce. The block was however part of the Becker purchase in 1893. Now managed by Adrian Hoffmann, the block goes from strength to strength.

The wine has all the hallmarks of Northern Barossa Shiraz is a great season - powerful bright purple red hue, blackberry and earth, full bodied. The dense fruit is balanced by abundant natural tannins which keeps everything in check. Undoubtedly a wine for cellaring, but for me, with the right food drinking well today.

Technical Tasting Notes

2024 Koonunga Ancestor Vine Shiraz

GROWING SEASON
The dry winter and spring made the vines work during the early part of the growing season, and bud burst started in September, three weeks earlier than the year before. Damaging frosts particularly, in September and October meant some vineyards had significant damage that influenced their subsequent yield. Veraison in many vineyards was a month earlier than 2023. Reds, with small berries, show intensity and vibrancy. Shiraz excelled.
