Hayes Family Wines - Good Coffee is Necessary to Make Good Wine

Darlings - My Tanunda Local

Good Coffee is essential for a Good Barossa Vintage

Like all places across the globe, coffee is an essential start to any day in the Barossa. Over vintage the best coffee places offer a place to meet up with fellow winemakers and growers to have a chat, to track vintage progress and of course to just relax. We all have our schedules, and you can plan your meetings around the venue and who frequents, a who’s who of Barossa luminaries.

For Andrew and I and our vintage workers, each day over vintage starts with a coffee, a chat and a plan for the day. Similar to my corporate days but with more fun ahead most days!

With each grower visiting with samples, or pickers in the vineyard, more coffee and often cake to go with it!

But where did we frequent, and why, and more important where should you try when you are next in the Valley looking for a coffee, cake or breakfast?

Tanunda

Darlings (56 Murray St, Tanunda)

Tanunda is the tourist capital of the Barossa, and also our home for vintage at our Cottage in Julius Street. It is flooded with coffee spots, Beans and Cream, Red Door, Keils and so many more. For me though, Wendy, Alex and the team at Darlings is my pick. The menu is simple, service is good. It is the place to meet up with many of my mates over vintage whilst we await our coffees - you can order ahead but most days, I prefer to have a chat.

They make some of the best muffins money can buy and the coffee is good.

Nuriootpa

Fleur Social (55C Murray St, Nuri)

Fleur Social is my regular when I am staying at the Schulz’s, dropping off samples at the wine clinic or having a meeting at BBS, CCL or any other of our suppliers. Nuri is the industrial centre for the Barossa. But the coffee here is worth the trip.

Coffee is made by Ryan, great guy, and his wife is the florist - this has got me out of trouble more than once.

Call ahead for takeaway, or stay in. It’s frequented by the Northeners, so always good for a chat.

Greenock

El Estanco (18-22 Murray St, Greenock)

Greenock is a beautiful little town, home to the best pub in the Barossa and also a great place for coffee or brunch. I am rarely driving through Greenock, but it is a destination and is worth the short drive.

El Estanco feels like a trendy cafe in inner Melbourne, food is excellent, exciting and expensive. But it’s the perfect spot for Sunday Brunch with or without the family.

Angaston

Hive (60 Murray St, Angaston)

Hive has been through a few name changes, and changed hands a few times, but I love it for a casual breakfast on Saturday mornings after the market shop. Good coffee and the smoked salmon is fantastic.
