2022 Koonunga Ancestor Vine Shiraz Pressings

$325.00

Our 2022 Koonunga Ancestor Vine Shiraz Pressings from the great 2022 vintage comes from the old Becker Block in Koonunga, in the Barossa’s Northern reaches. The vines were thought to have been planted in either the 1860s or 1870s, but as was the case back then, documentation is scarce. The block was however part of the Becker purchase in 1893. Now managed by Adrian Hoffmann, the block goes from strength to strength.

In 2022, we left a 225 litres of pressings in a Laurent Magic Barrel for an extended period. The resulting wine is impressive to say the least. It has all the hallmarks of Northern Barossa Shiraz is a great season - powerful bright purple red hue, blackberry and earth, full bodied. The dense fruit is balanced by abundant natural tannins which keeps everything in check. A cellaring special.

GROWING SEASON
The 2022 Barossa Valley vintage will be remembered as the second almost faultless season in a row after an equally impressive although different 2021 vintage. Both Vintages were cool, the coolest since 2002. Good spring rain meant that we entered the growing season with good soil moisture levels. warm dry growing season followed, with balanced and healthy canopie producing an average crop of extremely high quality fruit.

A pigeon pair, perhaps the best two since 1990/1991 if not longer. The good news is that flavours and colours (in reds) and the vibrancy and lift in the whites are incredible. Overall quality is exceptional.

TASTING NOTE

Our Single Block Koonunga Ancestor Vine Shiraz Pressings from the truly exceptional 2022 vintage comes from our Ancestor Shiraz block in Koonunga in the Northern reaches of the Barossa Valley. Farmed by the Becker family since the 1800s, this block was thought to have been planted in the 1860s or 1870s but no formal records exist.

The wine has all the hallmarks of a Northern Barossa Shiraz - bright purple red hue, powerful black and blue fruits, full bodied, the dense fruit balanced by abundant natural tannins. This wine is well integrated but has ample tannin to carry it forward for many years to come.
