Technical Tasting Notes
2023 HOFFMANN DV SHIRAZ
GROWING SEASON
The 2023 Barossa Valley vintage will be remembered as one of the latest ripening vintages in recent memory. After a wet winter, the rains continued into November. This meant the growing season was off to a slow start. The Barossa season from this point on was almost perfect with ripening occurring well into Autumn. Unusual for the Barossa and certainly impacting the style of the wines particularly those coming from later ripening, overcropped or cooler sites. A vintage that will have a split personality, the great vineyards with the best growers on warm sites excelled.
TASTING NOTE
Our 'Vineyard Series' Hoffmann DV Shiraz from the excellent 2023 vintage comes from the old section of the Hoffmann Dallwitz Vineyard in Ebenezer. This block was planted in 1888 and is well known as one of the very best of the Northern Barossa.
The wine has all the hallmarks of a northern Barossa Shiraz - bright purple red hue, powerful black and blue fruits, full bodied, the dense fruit balanced by abundant natural tannins. This wine is drinking well on release but is sure to improve with cellar time.

2023 Vineyard Series Hoffmann DV Shiraz
Vinous - Angus Hughson
93 Points - There’s lots to like in the 2022 Shiraz Hoffmann DV. It shows inky, licorice and blackberry essence aromas with a smoky edge, all compact and well-composed. This is a mid-weight and vibrant style of this vineyard, more savory than usual, but it retains its class and holds shape well over an extended finish.

94 Points - From a late ripening vintage, those with warmer sites thrived, and this Hoffman DV Shiraz from Hayes Family Wines certainly shows its pedigree.
It possesses more lift than the 2022 release; the wet, cooler year certainly played its hand. Blue fruits are more prominent with a basket full of blackberries and mulberries providing plenty of palate-staining depth. Cola and licorice add savoury impact along with well-positioned oak, as fine spices and crushed peppercorns are scattered about. The structure and shape are in fine order and I can only imagine the pleasure this will bring with careful aging. Dusty and cocoa-like tannins coat the mouth in what seems a fine spray that dries out ever so slowly. Another impressive Shiraz from this ever-reliable producer.

93 Points - A generous embrace highlights this Hayes Family Wines Hoffman DV Shiraz 2022.
A bevvy of savoury delights features large. Think cedar, clove, cola and nutmeg. Pretty scents of ripe blackcurrant swoon. The mouth is filled with blackberries, baked blueberries, mulberries, oyster sauce and licorice. On opening, the oak has a vice-like grip but gradually releases its hold with time in the glass as some vanilla rises up. Dusty tannins coat the mouth on a moreish finish. Above all, it's the sheet of consistency that flows throughout that has me leaning in. Well played.

95 Points - Boom! The power and the poise. The longevity of this Shiraz will have you punching the air no end. With a superb structure and balance, go here. One sip is far from enough for this excellent Barossa Valley Shiraz.
Shy on opening, it got into a grove after a couple of days. The lesson here is a good decant or put it away and forget about it - the reward is thrilling.
Joyous blueberry and boysenberry fruit coil themselves around a muscular frame. Some sweet blackberry jam slides in late and then moves on as quickly as it arrives. Delicate spices roll through the mouth - think brown baking spices and cardamom. There's even a touch of cured meat. Cedar and a lick of caramel, a ribbon of dark chocolate runs long. The tannins are firm and churn away - yes! I'm sitting up tall and I love being dragged along for the ride.

94 Points - From a famous grower, this 2021 Shiraz Hoffmann DV offers a core of powerful aromas. Blackberry and cherry compote are topped by licorice and exotic spices. It’s a delicious entrée with powerful flavours – olive tapenade and tempered chocolate are firmly wrapped up in structural tannins. It remains beautifully composed and balanced over a length and sustained finished. A serious Barossa wine that needs time to blossom.

93 Points - Shiraz from the renowned Hoffmann vineyard in the northern subregion of Ebenezer delivers a vibrant yet deep wine loaded with characters of macerated plum and summer berry fruits with hints of dark chocolate, oak spice, espresso, blueberry pie, berry cream, jasmine and earth. Unctuous with creamy berry fruits, a fair lick of mocha oak and compact, fine northern Barossa tannin heft finishing concentrated, opulent and toothsome.

93 Points - Adrian Hoffmann's famous Ebenezer vines deliver density of licorice, blackberries and blood plums, well set in bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. High-cocoa dark chocolate and coffee-bean oak carries a long finish, always just behind the fruit, as it should be.
