2021 Primrose Vineyard Ebenezer Mataro

2021 Primrose Vineyard Ebenezer Mataro

$45.00

($38.25 Wine Club price)

100% Bush Vine Mataro grown on the famous Schulz Primrose Vineyard in the Ebenezer sub-region in the Northern Barossa. Hand-picked, hand-sorted, de-stemmed and open-fermented before spending an extended period on skins. Matured for 9 months in a single seasoned French oak hogshead before being bottled unfined and unfiltered in January 2022.

The 2021 Primrose Vineyard Mataro, like its sibling mataro’s is fruit driven, showing predominately dark fruits, earth, spice and tar. Quite rich for a Mataro curtsey of the higher altitude section of the vineyard and a truly exception season. It has little or no oak influence and is a very powerful expression of the wonderful fruit that we received in the winery in the great 2021 vintage. A wine to be enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.

2021 PRIMROSE VINEYARD MATARO

GROWING SEASON
The 2021 Barossa Valley vintage will be remembered as an almost faultless season after the challenging years that preceded it. Good spring rains meant that for the first time in many years we entered the growing season with good soil moisture levels. A warm dry growing season followed, with balanced and healthy canopies producing an average crop of extremely high quality fruit. Certainly the best in a decade, maybe longer. The good news is that flavours and colours (in reds) and overall quality is exceptional. A truly great Barossa vintage in the making.

TASTING NOTE
Our Single Block 'Vineyard Series' Primrose Mataro from the great 2021 vintage comes from a tiny patch of dry grown bush vine Mataro from high in the hills of the famed Schulz Vineyard in the Ebenezer district of the Northern Barossa. The soil in this section of the vineyard is rich ironstone over clay.

The wine has all the hallmarks of a Northern Barossa Mataro grown on ironstone soils - bright purple red hue, powerful fruit, earth and mineral flavours, full bodied, the dense fruit balanced by abundant natural tannins. Although drinking well on release will surely improve for many years in the cellar.

2021 Vineyard Series Primrose Vineyard Mataro

2024 Wine Companion (James Halliday)

94 Points - Sourced from a tiny, dry-grown bush block on the Schulz vineyard in the Ebenezer district. A very attractive wine, supple and long, plum and blackberry fruit the drivers within a perfectly balanced palate. With only 55 dozen made, there's no showboating here.

Vintage Journal (Andrew Caillard)

93 Points - Deep crimson in colour with intense dark cherry, blackberry aromas with graphite, mocha complexity. Beautifully concentrated on the palate with lovely dense ripe dark cherry, blackberry fruits, al dente textures and underlying mocha, espresso oak complexity. The finish is chocolaty and fruit sweet with juicy acidity lengthening the palate. Very good winemaking.

2019 Vineyard Series Primrose Vineyard Mataro

2021 Wine Companion (James Halliday)

97 Points - Sourced from a tiny patch of bush vines dry-grown on the Schulz Vineyard in Ebenezer. An extremely powerful, full-bodied wine that manages to also have a juicy lift and a mix of spicy/earthy tannins. Mataro seldom scales the heights, exemplified by this wine in ‘19. 14% alc. Drink to 2049.

Q-Wine Reviews - www.qwinereviews.com (Steve Leszczynski)

95 Points - Precision. Not a hair out of place. Mataro bliss.

Sleek, this wine slips through the mouth with ease. Sit down and have a glass of wine with winemaker Andrew Seppelt and his drink of choice is always Mataro. He loves the stuff and his passion for the variety is evident here.

From Ebenezer, a Barossa sub-region to the north, the fruit is grown on bush vines.

Scents of sauteed mushrooms, truffles, puffs of earth, popcorn kernels and red plum skins all reach out with open hands. Silky in delivery, it's meaty with dusty earth feels and that charcuterie board delish factor. Beautifully balanced and delicately spiced, its persistence is an absolute delight. Mataro heaven you could say. Go here and give me all of it!
