Barossa Valley Fortified Wines
The Barossa Valley was founded on the production of Barrel Aged Tawny and Brandy. We continue this tradition with a range of Tawnies and Brandies with components beyond 50 years of age.

Our 5th Batch of Old Grand Tawny. It comes from predominantly Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro components from our old tawny stocks. It does contain more shiraz then previous releases hence a deeper colour then previously.
Our 7th Batch of Very Old Rare Tawny comes from our old stocks of traditional Barossa Tawny that have been aging gracefully for many years in 100 year old whiskey barrels. This batch of less than 300 500ml bottles comprises components from our old Grenache based barrels, Touriga barrels and components from our other old Tawnies to provide freshness. Tasting just beautifully on release.
Our 1st batch of Rick’s Rare Tawny comes from some truly special and unique stocks of ancient tawny that has been in the Burge Family stocks for close to 100 years. Rick is one of the true gentlemen of wine, a wonderful man with a wonderful pallet. He is a great supporter of ours, and has helped us more than most over the years. Is blending skills are legendary. He has over the past 20 years steadily moved his vast stocks on to the next generation.
He did however retain a small batch, a batch that was truly special. Recently he asked me whether I was interested. The answer was of course yes. This blend, a reflection of the legend that is Rick Burge brings together ancient components from the last of his family stocks, a truly unique Barossa Tawny that each of us should try at least once. This batch is tiny but comprises some of the very best fortified barrels I have seen.
Rutherglen Topaque is truly one of the great wines of the world. When it gains age, true age, it has a unique flavour profile that cannot be replicated. But, old fortifieds are getting rare. Fortunately for you, many years ago I started accumulating fortifieds. No real plan but in the hope that one day they would be appreciated.
This is one such batch. A single hogshead of Rare Rutherglen Topaque. Trust me, it is amazing. It has a depth of flavour and complexity that clearly signals its age, ample sweetness but balanced by high acidity. Drink now
Rutherglen Muscat is truly one of the great wines of the world. When it gains age, true age, it has a unique flavour profile that cannot be replicated. But, old muscat’s are getting rare. Often blended, single vintage fortifieds are rare, 50 year old single barrels particularly so. Fortunately for you, many years ago I started accumulating fortifieds. No real plan but in the hope that one day they would be appreciated.
This is one such batch. A single barrique of 1972 Single Vintage Rutherglen Muscat. Trust me, it is amazing. It has a depth of flavour that clearly signals its age, sweet but balanced by high acidity such that it does not show. Drink now
Drinking just beautifully on release and will do so for 30 years or more. Rich, ripe Hoffmann Ebenezer Shiraz from the wonderful 2021 Vintage. Picked ripe, fortified with Fine Barossa Brandy Spirit and bottled after 12 months in barrel. Deep purple colour with lifted dark berry / blueberries aromas. Complex flavours of dark fruits and a backbone of refreshing acidity gives balance and fine tannins lead to a persistent drier finish. Just lovely now or in 20 or 30 years.
Seek out classic matches such as aged blue cheese or nuts, or when young, find a big juicy steak. A truly great wine style for every dinner party.
From our Old & Rare Release comes our single vintage, single barrel 2006 XO Barossa Brandy.
Bright mid-amber colour. Highly perfumed bouquet, a touch of dried fruit, citrus and spice. The flavour is intense balancing an underlying power and strength with an elegant finish. The palate is refined, elegant and very long, with a clean finish. A wonderful introduction to Australian Brandy and a micro scale.
From our Old & Rare Release comes our single vintage, single barrel 1989 Hors D’Age 30yo Barossa Brandy.
Deep amber colour; the bouquet shows more oak influence than the XO and is richer, heavier with more weight and power. Very complex, with an abundance of dried fruit. Great persistence and length. Very much in the style of the Australian brandy’s of years gone by. A wonderful spirit in the context of what we do at Hayes Family Wines.
