The results are in!

At Hayes Family Wines, we are once again very excited to announce our fantastic ratings published in the 2021 James Halliday Wine Companion.

This year, we received our best ratings yet with 10 wines scoring 95 points or higher. This highlights the consistent high quality achieved across our range of wines. In addition, our Vineyard Series Primrose Mataro scored 97 points and is one of only 8 wines featured in the Best of the Best by Variety (Other red varietals and blends).

James Halliday awarded us the prestigious five-star winery rating for the fourth year running. Best of the Best - 2019 Primrose Mataro

Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre or Monastrell) is perhaps not as well known as Shiraz or Grenache, but for us it plays a critical role in the history of the Barossa and often is one of the wines that sells out first. In our Mataro, you taste the combination of fruit and rich savoury spicy flavours. You quickly notice how food friendly the wine is and this makes it extremely popular. The Mataro vine comes from the Mediterranean and therefore perfectly matches Mediterranean food. It is a wine we love to drink with dinner.

2019 Hayes Family Vineyard Series Primrose Vineyard Barossa Valley Mataro, $40

Sourced from a tiny patch of bush vines dry-grown on the Schulz Vineyard in Ebenezer. An extremely powerful, full-bodied wine that manages to also have a juicy lift and a mix of spicy/earthy tannins. Mataro seldom scales the heights, exemplified by this wine in ‘19. 14% alc. Drink to 2049.
